What can animals teach us?

According to people who are around them on a regular basis, animals teach us humility, true balance and a respect for nature. Wild creatures have each found their own ecological niche and don’t encroach on the space of other animal species, including that of human beings. They are parsimonious in their use of the natural resources at hand, and use them only to ensure their family’s and their own survival. By observing animals in their natural habitat we also learn more about ourselves, our roots and our evolution. Has it not been said that we share 98% of our DNA with the great apes and more than 80% with mice? The French ethologist Boris Cyrulnik believes that animals help us redefine ourselves. According to him, understanding animal lifestyles and their sensory world helps us in fact better understand our own place in the living world.
