In France and Québec, the problem is that animals are considered as objects and not as sensitive beings that have rights. We're working, for instance, on getting rights for the great apes; it's just starting to happen, but we're walking a fine line. It's true that everybody's a lobbyist when it comes to animal exploitation. The farm lobby for instance has no
interest whatsoever in having animals be considered by law as sensitive beings because then any act of cruelty, any mistreatment at all would mean that farmers would be punishable by law. It's very complicated because the law and people's attitudes must evolve hand in hand. Unfortunately, it's the same situation in France as in Québec.
