Can humans and animals communicate with each other?


In 1966, Drs. Allen and Beatrix Gardner, researchers at the University of Reno, taught American Sign Language to Washoe, a female chimpanzee. Through pictures, Washoe learned to recognize and describe several objects and animals and could keep adding to her vocabulary. Washoe was then taken in by Roger Fouts, the great specialist in primate behaviour, who discovered that monkeys could transmit sign language to their fellow-primates.
