Fauna Foundation

Gloria Grow and Richard Allan are two of the founders of the Fauna Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing a healthy environment for neglected and abused farm and circus animals, as well as for chimpanzees that have been used as subjects in biomedical research. For a number of years, the couple, both animal lovers, had been dreaming of settling in the country. In 1990, Gloria and Richard bought a house and farm in Carignan, a town near Montreal, Quebec. At first, the farm had only three sheep, a few goats and some chickens and turkeys. Today, the farm is home to about 200 animals, including horses, cows, pigs, ducks, several species of birds, llamas and 14 chimpanzees. Fauna ensures that chimpanzees who have spent their lives in cramped steel cages can enjoy a peaceful retirement in an environment created with their well-being in mind. Life at the sanctuary allows them to get the care and affection they need.

In addition to taking in distressed animals, the Fauna Foundation works to highlight its environmental heritage. The wooded part of the Carignan property has been designated the  Réserve naturelle du Ruisseau-Robert by Quebec’s Ministry of Natural Resources. Apart from agricultural lands, the site also incorporates a lake, a brook and a young forest home to native animal and plant species. Fauna provides a peaceful and majestic environment for animals and visitors alike.
